International Health Lecture 2015

00.00, Wednesday 07 October 2015

London

The Academy's annual International Health Lecture provides a platform for leaders in global health to discuss topics of international significance – promoting debate, discussion and the exchange of ideas on current research. The 2015 Lecture will be presented by Professor Vikram Patel FMedSci, under the title 'Re-engineering personalised medicine for chronic diseases'.

As populations age globally, multiple morbidities (the co-occurrence of more than one chronic disease, often including a mental or substance use disorder) are becoming more common and are associated with higher levels of disability and health care use.

This lecture will draw upon the speaker’s mothers’ experiences with health care in India and the evidence on how chronic diseases could be managed through a collaborative care model, to make the case for the integration of the care of chronic diseases in primary care as key to improving the access to evidence based interventions for people with comorbid conditions, reducing the fragmented and inefficient manner in which care is currently delivered, and delivering care that is person-centred.

Professor Patel is Professor of International Mental Health and Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The lecture will commence at 18:00, with registration and refreshments from 17:30.

Please note, this event is fully booked. We are now operating a waiting list, please contact Ben Bleasdale (ben.bleasdale@acmedsci.ac.uk) to register your interest and we will endeavor to allocate you a space.
