The annual Academy of Medical Sciences & The Lancet International Health Lecture provides a platform for leaders in global health to discuss topics of international significance – promoting debate, discussion and the exchange of ideas on current research. The 2016 Lecture will be presented by Professor Karen Sliwa, under the title 'The heart of Africa: succeeding against the odds'.

A video of the event and refelections from the co-chair, Professor George Griffin, can be found here.

For more information about the lecture series, including past events, please visit this page.

The lecture will draw on Professor Sliwa’s expertise in the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease and its management in African populations. Professor Karen Sliwa is Director of the Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa at the University of Cape Town, as well as being a clinical cardiologist at Groote Schuur Hospital. Notably, in June 2016 she was elected as President of the World Heart Federation, a role that she will commence in 2017. She is also Co-Chair of the Soweto Cardiovascular Research Group of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Professor Sliwa is globally recognised for her work on cardiovascular disease in Africa. She initiated the Heart of Soweto studies, which reported on the prevalence, presentation, and management of cardiac disease in an urban African population. Her work has since expanded, under the umbrella of the Heart of Africa studies, to other African countries including Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya and Sudan.

A case study which provides more information about Professor Sliwa and her expertise can be found here.

The lecture is free to attend but booking is essential. Please complete the below form to secure your place.

The lecture will commence at 18:00, with registration and refreshments from 17:30. It will be followed with a drinks reception.
