The Academy of Medical Sciences is delighted to launch two new fellowship schemes for international researchers as part of the Government’s Newton Fund, which is part of the UK’s official development assistance. We will be working with the other National Academies to offer Newton International and Newton Advanced Fellowships to non-UK scientists working in patient-oriented research over the next five years.
- Newton International Fellowships will provide early career post-doctoral researchers the chance to benefit from an extended period at a host university or research institution in the UK – for up to two years.
- Newton Advanced Fellowships will support early to mid-career researchers, who have already established (or are well advanced in the process of establishing) a research group or research network and have a research track record, for up to three years. The focus will be on developing their research strengths through collaboration and providing support for more formalised training and development, including short visits to the UK.
We are pleased to be collaborating closely with the Royal Society to deliver these two schemes.
In our first call under these schemes, we are inviting applications for the Newton Advanced Fellowship scheme from researchers in China, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 22 October at 5pm (UK time). We will open a call for Newton International Fellowships in early 2015 and we are working to include opportunities for researchers in additional countries in future calls for both schemes.

The Newton Fund is a £375 million fund operated by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills. It provides £75 million a year for five years, from 2014/15 and the intention is that UK funding is matched by partner countries. Through the Newton Fund, the UK will use its strength in research and innovation to promote the economic development and social welfare of partner countries. By working together on bi-lateral and multi-lateral programmes with a research and innovation focus, the UK will build strong, sustainable, systemic relationships with partner countries.
Our partner countries will also be offering opportunities to UK researchers.
