In January 2012 the European Commission issued proposals for a European Regulation on Data Protection, which could have an impact on medical research in the UK and Europe.Project Downloads:
The Academy subsequently endorsed a joint statement from non-commercial UK-based organisations on how the Regulation should faciliate medical research. This fed into a UK Ministry of Justice consultation of the Regulation that helped determine the UK's negotiating position.
To better build consensus across the medical science community in Europe, the Academy also took a leading role in preparing a Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM) statement on the Regulation.
The Academy is now working with parters in Europe and the UK to ensure that the Regulation faciliates medical research. Relevant briefing material can be found below.
