Medicine, which often bring genuine benefits, will always carry some degree of risk, and there is evidence that society is becoming increasingly risk averse. It is therefore vital for health practitioners and policymakers to be aware of the benefits and harms associated with medicines and other health interventions when making decisions about their use.
The Academy is now seeking to help improve the communication of the benefits and harms of medical interventions to assist health practitioners, patients, policymakers and scientists make better decisions about healthcare and research. To achieve this goal is held a high-level workshop of key stakeholders in September 2008.
