Project Downloads:The UK’s amended Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act was enacted in November 2008.
Throughout the parliamentary debate of this legislation the Academy worked closely with a number of organisations, including the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust and Royal Society to advise MPs and others on scientific and regulatory issues around inter-species embryos.
In addition to the Academy's working group report, 'Inter-species embryos' activity included written briefings, one-to-one meetings and support of a dedicated session of the All Party Parliamentary Group of Medical Research.
The Academy continues to work with partner organisations in responding to Government consultations as the Act is implemented and the related Regulations laid.
The Academy published 'Hype, hope and hybrids' a booklet which documents science, policy and media perspectives of the passage of this legislation through Parliament.
The Academy is committed to further work considering how different entities along the human/animal spectrum are treated for the purposes of law and regulation.
