Summary:UK clinical research is currently benefiting from significant additional investment from Government and other research funders. A challenge for funders and institutions is to allocate resources across the range of clinical academic specialties, to most effectively pursue research and its translation into improved healthcare.Working Group Membership:
The Academy’s Clinical Academic Careers Committee, chaired by Professor Patrick Sissons FMedSci, has published a report providing guidance on how funding and resource should be used to support clinical academic specialties.
The report sets out factors that should be taken into account when allocating resources across clinical academic specialties. Its recommendations, aimed at facilitating a more co-ordinated approach to building clinical academic research and workforce capacity, are presented as guidelines for funding bodies and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) to utilise when allocating programmatic research funding and fellowships.

Project Downloads:To assist in the aim of developing an appropriately constituted clinical academic workforce which is able to respond to the UK health challenges and research imperatives now and in the future.
In order to achieve this goal, the Clinical Academic Careers Committee will:
· Outline broad principles for assessing and allocating fellowship funding across academic specialties.
· Using case studies, define the determinants of vulnerability and success for specific academic specialties.
· Identify opportunities and barriers to achieving a robust and varied clinical academic workforce.
· Where appropriate, make comparisons of clinical academic workforce profiles in other countries.
· Advise the relevant constituencies on areas of further exploration and where appropriate, recommend action.
