Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is the leading supporter of cancer research in British universities and medical schools, with a dedicated team of 3,000 scientists and clinicians around the country and an annual scientific spend of more than £176 million. Committed to developing the next generation of highly trained cancer specialists, Cancer Research UK has a co-ordinated programme of basic and applied medical research Fellowships.

Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist Fellowships

The Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist Fellowship provides up to 5 years support for outstanding clinical researchers who wish to consolidate their research skills and make the transition from doctoral research training to independent postdoctoral investigators.

Cancer Research UK only considers applications that are cancer orientated and contain a rigorous research focus. Applicants will be considered on the basis of their academic achievements and potential; the appeal and scientific merit of the research project; the research environment provided by the sponsoring department, and the availability of supporting expertise and resources.

Cancer Research UK considers these Fellowships to be important career development awards and wishes to see such fellows associated with Cancer Research UK Clinical Units and/or Cancer Research UK research groups whenever possible. Applications to work in non-Cancer Research UK laboratories will be considered, but if this is intended the Cancer Research UK should be consulted before the application is made.

Who can apply?

All applicants should be of Specialist Registrar or Consultant status and have obtained a higher degree in a cancer-relevant research project, or expect to have received their doctorate by the time they intend to take up an award. Applications from previous holders of a Clinical Research Training Fellowship (previously Research Fellowship for Clinician) or core clinical fellowships will be particularly welcome.

The extent of the Fellow's clinical commitment will be negotiable depending on the speciality, the stage of their clinical training and the needs of the research. Each Fellowship will be tailored to the individual's specific needs.

Candidates of any nationality may apply but must have been resident in the EEA (European Economic Area) for three years immediately before application and intend to pursue a clinical academic career in the UK.

Funding

These Fellowships provide research expenses and an appropriate personal salary, in line with the applicant's current salary and grade. The duration of the Fellowship will be 2-5 years, depending on what stage a Fellow's career has reached. Applicants may request their preferred duration, but ultimately, the length of Fellowship will be determined by the Selection Board. Fellows will be able to spend up to 50 per cent of the duration of the Fellowship in higher specialist training in order to become accredited in their chosen clinical speciality. Applicants should note that although Cancer Research UK will be paying for some clinical work, it will not meet the costs of any Additional Duty Hours. Cancer Research UK will expect basic equipment to be provided by the host institution but requests for essential specialised items may be made, provided they are fully justified. Research or technical assistance may be requested but will only be approved if there is a strong scientific case.
