Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship Scheme

The Daniel Turnberg Trust Fund UK/Middle East Travel Fellowship Scheme

The scheme provides opportunities for short-term exchange of medical researchers between the UK and countries in the Middle East. It aims to offer applicants the chance to gain further research experience, learn new techniques and to foster scientific collaboration.

This scheme was launched in 2008 and has been a resounding success, with twenty candidates successfully gaining travel fellowship awards through the first round of funding. View further details of 08/09 awardees.

The call for applications for the 2nd round of funding has now come to an end. The Selection Panel will convene in March 2010. All applicants will be notified as to the Panel's decision towards the end of March 2010.

1) What the scheme provides:
  • The opportunity for medical researchers and bioscientists from the Middle East to visit a research institution of their choice in the UK and the opportunity for those from the UK to visit a research institution of their choice in the Middle East.
  • Airfare and a subsistence allowance for a period of up to four weeks.
  • Funding provision to an upper limit of £4,000 per fellowship.

The aim of the scheme is to encourage researchers to experience an alternative research environment, to learn new techniques and initiate ideas for future collaborations. The Fellowships are aimed primarily at young scientists embarking on a career in research. As part of the application process, applicants are required to identify the institution that they intend to visit and must contact and secure support from this institution and relevant department. The institution must confirm its willingness to host the applicants visit, as part of the Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship Scheme.

2) Additional award available through the 2nd round of funding:

The Academy is pleased to announce an additional Travel Fellowship available specifically to applicants whose research falls within the fields of surgical technology or quality and safety. Applications are sought from researchers working in either of these areas. This fellowship will be in addition to those fellowships available through the main scheme (open to all areas within medical and bioscience research).

3) Who can apply?
  • Medical researchers and bioscientists from the following countries are eligible to apply:
         - Egypt
         - Israel
         - Jordan
         - Lebanon
         - Palestinian Territory
         - United Kingdom
  • Applicants should be at the early to mid stage of their research career.
  • The scheme is open to both medical and non-medical graduates who have shown signs of a commitment to a career in research (e.g. having a higher qualification such as an MD or PhD).
  • Applicants will typically be at lecturer and/or post-doctoral level.
  • The research may be in any field within the broad scope of medical and bioscience research.

4) Application process and timescales:
  • Applications must be made through the applicant's Head of Department who will act as sponsor for the candidate.
  • The second round of funding will open for applications from 1 October 2009.
  • The deadline for completed applications is 8 January 2010.
  • The Selection Panel will convene towards the end of March 2010.
  • Awards will be made in April 2010.

5) The following application materials should be submitted:
  • A completed application form (available to download below).
  • A signed letter from your home Head of Department (as sponsor), summarising the applicant’s principal achievements.
  • A signed letter from the Head of Department of the host institution confirming their willingness to participate in the scheme.

6) What the scheme does not provide:

The Scheme does not cover bench fees, any contributions towards salaries, departmental costs or expenses relating to accompanying dependents. (This list is not exhaustive but offers examples of the type of costs that cannot be covered by the fellowship grant).

7) Administration

An awards committee comprised of key representatives from the Academy of Medical Sciences will oversee the process of the award. There will be an upper limit of around £4,000 for each fellowship award made. The Academy of Medical Sciences will manage and administer the scheme and all enquiries should be directed to them.

8) Funding

This scheme is funded by the Daniel Turnberg Fellowship Trust and has received additional funding and ongoing support from the following institutions:
  • The Wellcome Trust
  • The Wolfson Foundation
  • The Royal College of Physicians
  • The Wohl Foundation
