Internship schemes

The Academy of Medical Sciences has run internship schemes for over ten years, giving PhD students a fully-funded first-hand experience of the medical science environment, from policy reports and consultations to grant panels and career support.

Over a three-month internship, interns gain personal insights into how research impacts the wider biomedical system and can build valuable networks with the UK’s most eminent medical scientists and key science and health stakeholders.

Read our internship case studies to find stories from former interns, from people who took part right at the start of the scheme who've gone on to work in a wide range of fields, to reflections from some of our most recent interns. You might also like to read two former policy interns' top tips for making the most of your internship.

Agile working: The Academy of Medical Sciences is currently working in an agile way with staff working from home and our Central London offices. The Academy has gained significant experience in conducting remote and agile internships and the programme continues to offer a highly rewarding experience for interns.

Duration and funding: Interns are supported for the full three-month internship period by a three-month extension to their PhD stipend. In exceptional circumstances we will also consider requests for internships of a reduced duration.

Application process: Candidates are asked to supply a completed application form that includes a CV and a personal statement, as well as an endorsement and a supporting statement from their supervisor. We may also ask for a written piece on a topic of your choice as a sample of your work. We hold competitive interviews for internships and provide feedback.

Our policy internship scheme is designed to give students first-hand experience of the medical science policy environment, to gain insights into how research can impact on policy, and to build valuable networks with the UK’s most eminent medical scientists and key science and health stakeholders.
