Next steps for stratified medicine

The Academy's FORUM report outlines the benefits of a stratified medicine approach and the importance of engaging with society at large to start the journey towards P4 (predictive, preventive, personalised and participatory) medicine.

On 12 May 2015, the Academy of Medical Sciences’ FORUM, in partnership with the Medical Research Council, Science Europe and the University of Southampton, held the symposium on ‘Stratified, personalised or P4 medicine: a new direction for placing the patient at the centre of healthcare and health education.

The event brought together over 100 participants from across academia, industry, clinical practice, regulators, government, the NHS and the third sector to consider how stratified medicine could be applied across the spectrum of disease. The agenda also explored issues of its implementation in healthcare settings and a horizon scanning exercise in how the healthcare community could be prepared to embrace this targeted approach to therapy.

The meeting report highlights the breadth of opportunity offered by a stratified approach to medicine and the urgent need to engage all stakeholders on the journey towards P4 medicine. In particular, it highlights the opportunity to make full use of available data and technological advances, and the important role of patients and the public in driving the adoption of stratified medicine. However, there are still significant barriers remaining to the uptake of stratified medicine, including current pricing and reimbursement models, as well as gaps in capacity and capability in the healthcare system and its need to evolve alongside this new approach.

The report can be downloaded from this page and is accompanied by the animation above which provides a quick, visual overview of P4 medicine and some of the key points from the symposium. For further information please visit the stratified medicine policy page.

The Academy of Medical Sciences’ FORUM was established in 2003 and aims to catalyse connections across industry, academia and the healthcare sector. Since then, a range of FORUM activities and events have brought together researchers, research funders and research users from across academia, industry, government, and the charity, healthcare and regulatory sectors. Further information and details of future events can be found on the FORUM homepage
