Shape of Training

Academy activity related to recommendations for changes to postgraduate medical training

Status: Ongoing

The 2013 ‘Shape of Training’ Review examined postgraduate medical education and training in the UK with the aim of ensuring that doctors now and in the future are able to meet the changing needs of patients, society and health services.

In February 2013 the Academy provided its own written submission to the review and led led a joint written submission from 33 supporters and funders of health research. Furthermore, the President provided oral evidence in April 2013. The Academy's input stressed the importance of equipping the entire workforce with a research awareness and of maintaining strong academic leadership in the NHS.

The final report from the review was published on 29 October 2013. After the publication of the final report, the Academy released an immediate response statement.

The final recommendation of the report was that a UK-wide Delivery Group should be formed immediately to oversee the implementation of the recommendations.

In April 2014, the Academy convened a high level scoping group, chaired by Sir Patrick Sissons FMedSci, to consider the impact of the report's recommendations on clinical academia.

The Academy continues to monitor the development and implementation of the report's recommendations.
